10.1. Why Webmaster FTP is targeted at UNIX servers?

www.zzee.com | You are here: Contents > 10. FAQ > 10.1. Why Webmaster FTP is targeted at UNIX servers?

Most web hosting providers have UNIX / Linux / BSD servers with Apache web server, because they are the best choice for internet and web, and the majority of the webmasters have accounts on such servers. However, most FTP client programs have little or no support for UNIX or Apache specifics, such as UNIX executable files, links, .htaccess files, etc. Thus webmasters have hard time recognizing links to files or folders, hardly can determine which script has been set correct permissions for CGI execution, hardly can remember in what mode (binary or ASCII) ".htaccess" files should be uploaded. All this cause errors, frustration and the time loss. We have released WebMaster FTP that addresses these issues.

10.2. Why can't the program get the listing of the remote folder?

Probably the remote FTP server doesn't support PASV mode, you need to switch to PORT (uncheck PASV checkbox) at Tools > Options > Connections and Transfers.

10.3. I transferred many files and connection broke in between, how do I handle this?

10.4. Why the program doesn't have the ability to remotely edit files?

www.zzee.com | You are here: Contents > 10. FAQ > 10.4. Why the program doesn't have the ability to remotely edit files?

That's because it doesn't have a built-in editor, and without it there is no point in doing this.

All FTP programs that don't have their own editor and that provide the feature of remote editing, actually do the following: (a) download file to a temp folder / temp file, (b) open it in some editor, (c) wait for the editor to finish its job, (d) upload file to the FTP server. There are many drawbacks in this scheme, for example: (a) FTP program doesn't know if user has successfully finished editing or simply cancelled editing and closed the editor, (b) if an error occurred during uploading, then temporary file may be lost or deleted, (c) it is hard for FTP program to determine which editor exactly the user wants to use in the particular situation.

We believe it is much better if user explicitly downloads the file, edits it and then uploads back to the site.
