Many email programs save account profiles that you can use to get mail messages without having to re-enter login and password values. If you saved such profile and can successfully receive messages, but forgot the password and need it, then it can be retrieved by Forgotten Mailbox Password.

The program emulates POP3 mail server and captures the password, which then (a) is sent back in the email message to the user and (b) displayed by Forgotten Mailbox Password. The program supports any POP3 mail account and any client email software which can store passwords, such as MS Outlook, MS Outlook Express, Netscape, Eudora, etc.

Note, the program can not recover the password that is not stored inside the email client software. It is useful in a situation when user entered and saved the password in the email client, but then forgot it. It may happen when user needs to setup new email program, to move to new PC, to give the password to a co-worker, etc.

6. Safe email programs

www.zzee.com | Support | You are here: Contents > 6. Safe email programs

Safe email program is a program that does not reset saved password when you change the host address of the incoming POP3 mail server.

If the program is safe, then you can safely change the POP3 mail server address to "127.0.0.1" in order to retrieve the password. When you get the password, then you can set the original host address back.

If the program is not safe, then you need to change the HOSTS file, so original POP3 mail server name will point to the local computer instead of the actual remote host. When you get the password, then you can remove that entry from hosts file.

6.1. How to determine if the program is safe

www.zzee.com | Support | You are here: Contents > 6. Safe email programs > 6.1. How to determine if the program is safe

We have provided the list of tested programs, you can refer to it to see if your program is safe. If the list doesn't contain your program or the version is significantly different, then you you'd better suppose that your program is *not* safe.

6.2. List of tested email programs

www.zzee.com | Support | You are here: Contents > 6. Safe email programs > 6.2. List of tested email programs

All these programs were tested with Forgotten Mailbox Password. Some of them, such as Eudora and Opera, don't save passwords by default and assume that user enter a password for the account in every new session, however they allow to save passwords.

Program Version Safe?
MS Outlook Express [ships with Windows or Internet Explorer] 5.50 Yes
MS Outlook [ships with MS Office] 2000 (9.0.x.x) Yes
Internet Mail and News [ships with IE 3.0 or Windows] 4.70.x Yes
Netscape Mail [ships with Netscape browser] 6.2 No *
Netscape Messenger [ships with Netscape Navigator / Communicator] 4.73 No
Eudora 5.1.1 No **
Opera [ships with Opera browser] 6.0 Yes

* This program doesn't seem to allow changing server address for the account at all.

** This program may leave the password under some conditions if you change the mail server address, but it is better to assume that it is not "safe".

If your program is not in this list, it doesn't mean that Forgotten Mailbox Password will not work with your program. It should work with any email program.
