1. Introduction

Many FTP programs save site profiles [called also accounts or bookmarks] that you can use to log into the site without having to re-enter login and password values. If you saved such profile and can successfully log into the site, but forgot the password and need it, then it can be retrieved by Forgotten FTP Password.

The program emulates FTP server and captures the password, which then is displayed to the user. The program supports any client FTP software which can store passwords, such as CuteFTP, WS FTP, Bullet Proof FTP, FlashFXP, FTP Explorer, FTP Voyager, LeechFTP, etc.

Note, the program can not recover the password that is not stored inside the FTP client software. It is useful in a situation when user entered and saved the password in the FTP client, but then forgot it. It may happen when user needs to setup new FTP program, to move to new PC, to give the password to a co-worker, etc.

3. Requirements

Windows 95 / 98 / ME / NT 4.0 / 2000 / XP.

4. Installation and deinstallation

Extract the distribution file into the clean folder. Run "setup.exe" and follow the prompts. Please always extract ZIP file, including all internal subdirectories, prior to installation, do not run "setup.exe" from inside ZIP file.

Note users of Windows NT 4.0, 2000 and XP: you may need some administrative rights for the installation. If you can't install the software, ask your system administrator or log in under administrator account.

To uninstall the software, use Add/Remove Programs link from Control Panel, or Uninstall link in the program's group in the Start Menu.

4.1. Running without installation

Just rename "setup.exe" to "zffp.exe" and launch it. If you use the program without installation, then you don't have to uninstall it as well.

5. Retrieving the password

Before retrieving the password first determine if your FTP program is "safe".

5.1. Retrieving from "safe" programs

• Go to the settings of the FTP site profile in your FTP program.
• Copy and save the current address [host name] of remote FTP server somewhere.
• Change remote FTP server address temporarily to "127.0.0.1" (quotes 
  should not be used).
• Save settings.
• Make sure that Forgotten FTP Password is "listening" (click Run button for that).
• Connect to this site with your FTP program [connection actually will go to your computer, where FFP resides].
• The password will be displayed in Forgotten FTP Password. If your FTP client displays session log, then the password will be available there too.
• Set back the original address of FTP server.
• Save settings.

5.2. Retrieving from "unsafe" programs [this method works for "safe" also]

• Via the button in Forgotten FTP Password open HOSTS file. Add a new line to it like:

  127.0.0.1 your.needed.host.com

• This line is needed to make connection not to go to the actual remote host, but instead to your computer where Forgotten FTP Password  resides. 
• Save HOSTS file.
• Make sure that Forgotten FTP Password is "listening" (click Run button for that).
• Connect to this site with your FTP program [connection actually will go to your computer, where FFP resides].
• The password will be displayed in Forgotten FTP Password. If your FTP client displays session log, then the password will be available there too.
• If your FTP program doesn't connect to Forgotten FTP Password on your computer, and still goes to the remote server, then you need to restart FTP client program or (if that doesn't help) restart your computer, so the new entry in the HOSTS file will take effect.
• When you get the password, remove that line from HOSTS file and save it.

6. Safe FTP programs

Safe FTP program is a program that does not reset saved password when you change the host address of the saved FTP site profile. 

If the program is safe, then you can safely change the host address to "127.0.0.1" in order to retrieve the password. When you get the password, then you can set the original host address back.

If the program is not safe, then you need to change the HOSTS file, so original host name will point to the local computer instead of the remote host. When you get the password, then you can remove that entry from hosts file.

6.1. How to determine if the program is safe

We have provided the list of tested programs, you can refer to it to see if your program is safe. If the list doesn't contain your program or the version is significantly different, then you you'd better suppose that your program is *not* safe.

6.2. List of tested FTP programs

All these programs were tested with Forgotten FTP Password.

If your program is not in this list, it doesn't mean that Forgotten FTP Password will not work with your program. It should work with any FTP program.

7. User interface

Run button is needed to allow incoming connections from FTP clients. If this button is switched off, then FTP clients can't connect to the program and it doesn't work as a FTP server.

Stop accept button turns off Run button and stops any incoming connections from FTP clients. This button doesn't affect established connections.

Kill all current button turns off Run button just like Stop accept, and it also breaks all running FTP sessions.

Hosts file button opens HOSTS file.

FTP TCP port edit box specifies what TCP port the program will listen on.

Your password is edit box will contain your password obtained from connected FTP client program.

8. Specifications
